–––––– WiMax Internet Access –––––

WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMAX is defined as a “last mile” broadband wireless access (BWA) alternative to cable modem service (dial-up access), Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) and Diginet.
What makes WiMAX so exciting is the broad range of applications it makes possible as it is not only limited to broadband Internet access. Other uses of WiMAX includes voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), backhaul for Wi-Fi hotspots and cell phone towers, mobile telephone service, mobile data TV, wireless backhaul as a substitute for fiber optic cable and much more.

What is the difference between WiMAX and Wi-Fi:
WiMAX is often referred to as Wi-Fi on steroids. Wi-Fi offers limited range, with a radius usually not more than 100 meter. Wi-Fi is the technology used in creating Internet hotspots. WiMAX on the other hand has a much greater range with a radius of upto 10 kilometers. Where Wi-Fi covers coffee shops and single buildings, WiMAX covers towns and cities.

A WiMAX tower is similar in concept to a cell-phone tower - A single WiMAX tower can provide coverage to a very large area, as big as 8,000 square km, WiMAX towers are usually connected together using a line-of-sight, microwave link. This connection to a second tower is often referred to a backhaul.

A WiMAX receiver or modem is needed to connect to the WiMax tower. This is a line-of-sight service, where a fixed receiver points straight at the WiMAX tower from a rooftop or pole. The line-of-sight connection is stronger and more stable than a mobile connection, so it’s able to send a lot of data with fewer errors.

What is required to makeuse of WiMAX:
To make use of WiMAX, subscribers firstly need to fall within the WiMAX coverage area. AS the current WiMAX service being offered is a line-of-sight service, the subscriber’s premises has to have line-of-sight to the WiMAX tower. Lastly, a subscriber requires a WiMAX receiver and a WiMAX Internet Data Package.

Who can make use of WiMAX:
WiMAX can be used by anyone who requires a permanent, fast, reliable and affordable Internet service. WiMAX is an ideal and cheaper alternative to ADSL and diginet for both the home and business environment.

Where is there coverage:
Currently the following and surrounding areas in Roodepoort are covered by WiMAX: Constantia Kloof, Constantia Park, Panorama, Weltevreden Park, Allen’s Nek, Randpark Ridge, Wilgeheuwel and Honeydew Ridge.
